Motivation

"The big rewards come to those who travel the second, undemanded mile."
— Bruce Barton

One of the most difficult things to do is go the second undemanded mile.  And for the independent business owner, who has no boss or manager overseeing him or her, it's hard to even go the first full mile.  Self-motivation is a very difficult thing to do and requires the greatest discipline.  One must constantly ask "is this the best use of my time" several times per day.  Additionally, it's vital to work from a list.  Get through a heavy list-then go the extra mile.   Want to break the back of a bad economy, go to work on yourself!

My last email broadcast

Below is a copy of a recent email message I sent out to the customers and friends in my address book.  I thank all of you who took time out to make comments.  I'm so glad what I was feeling and decided to communicate touched you enough for you to tell me about it.

Subject:
Just a little wisdom today

From the desk of Andrew Mazer

"Trying is lying. There is no such thing as trying. You do
it or you don't. You get results in life or you have
excuses why you didn't. When people say,
'I'll try,' they usually mean, 'I'm not
going to do it now.'"
— Dick Sutphen:

Dear Friends;

As you know, I usually make email messages to promote merchandise specials and today's motivational quote is so powerful, I thought I would take a moment and share it and my commentary on it.

Clearly, there's a lot of anxiety about the economy and business and jobs and circumstances and on and on. We can either be vicitms of circustances or creators of circumstances. This is a CHOICE. A majority of people and business will choose to be vicitms, not because they WANT to be vicitims but because they don't understand they can choose not to be. There are always opportunities, especially in THIS country. Those who choose to let circumstances rule them just make way for even MORE opportunities for those people who create them.

Think of it-many businesses are failing now. Can the void they leave in the marketplace benefit you? Can you attract the customers who were patronizing the business that is closing their doors? Can you purchase their stock for a fraction of the normal cost? Maybe renegotiate your rent or offer some special service to your customers because you can empathize with their situation. Newspapers and other advertising media are hurting for ad sales. Negotiate hard for a deal for making a good promotion for your store but before you do, go to the library and learn how to make an effective ad. Be a student. You CAN be proactive in this economy and don't just TRY......DO!

I have added a new link to the Mazer Wholesale web site called What's On Mazer's Mind which will contain similar content as what I've just delivered to you here. It's as much for me to exercise my own motivation as it is to share my philosphies with you, my friends and customers. I hope you'll check in there once in a while.

Thanks for reading. Now, GO TAKE ACTION!

Go Out & Get It!
It doesn't matter what kind of business you're in. Any business get have a presence outside his physical location.  It doesn't matter if you're a dollar store, grocery store, chiropractor, restaurant owner, or car dealer, we all must be woking on serving (selling) prospective customers where THEY ARE and not waiting for them to come to us.

Ask youself, "who are my prospective customers?" and be prepared to meet them, greet them and invite them to your store or web site.  (Oh, and if you don't have a web site, call me and I'll help you....but you MUST have a web site).  Who's going to get the business in this situation:

A pizza & sandwich joint gets 5000 menus printed and has a couple of kids hand-deliver them around the community and shopping center at a cost of about $1500    OR

The owner of th pizza joint goes out at 9:00am and personally visits a car dealer, real estate office and a dentist's office and offers them a special lunch for each member of the staff for just $4.99, specially made and delivered exclusively by him, the owner.  This owner can make 3 sales appointments and still be back at his restaurant in time to prepare for the day's business.

Are you reaching out to the principals at the schools, other owners of business, sharing ideas with other business people, reading your trade magazines for marketing ideas specific to your business?  While MOST business owners are complaining about RECESSION, you could be one of the few DOING something and set yourself apart from the masses.  This is an opportunity.  Go out & get it!

What can YOU do to get some STIMULUS MONEY?

I'm not a big fan of the "stimulus package".  I won't express my political views but the way I look at it, the government doesn't have the best reputation for efficiency.  A better place to focus our attention however is on the fact that there's going to be  A LOT OF MONEY put out on projects to get people back to work.  So I, for one, will be putting my focus on HOW CAN I COORDINATE MY EFFORTS TO GET SOME OF THAT MONEY TO BE SPENT ON MY BUSINESS?
